Ich habe in Vollzeit bei King gearbeitet (Über 3 Jahre)

    Pros

There are still talents in the company.
    Nice people on the ground.

    Kontras

Management and higher ups lack leadership and transparency.

    Rat an das Management

    Lead by example.

Ich habe in Vollzeit bei King gearbeitet

    Pros

    - Nice people
    - ‎Great benefits
    - ‎Good salary (although at some point you realize you are losing your value staying in this company)
    - ‎Low stress environment
    - Overall great place to retire

    Kontras

TLDR: aggressive non compete clause, lack of creative freedom, big and slow corporation, boring tasks, obsolete tech, small career advancement opportunities.

    - 3 month notice period + 3 month non-compete period is not used to protect the company. Instead it's aggresively used to bully people who is quitting and scare people who is thinking to quit. Non-compete is even applied, if you go outside of mobile game industry. This is especially damaging, because not all companies will wait 6 month to hire you.
    - Work on personal projects is disallowed. Even non commercially for self education purpose. And you have to ask special permission to participate in game jams.
    - ‎Not much career advancement opportunities inside of Berlin studio.

    - Company is being run by salesmen, who have no idea of how to manage creative people.
    - ‎Don't believe the promotional materials on the web. Don't fool yourself, King is a big corporation with corresponding negative traits.
    - ‎Company management goes not follow the company values it has defined.
    - Everything in the company happens extremely slow. And numerous middle managers makes it even worse.
    - ‎Decision making happens painfully slow, partially because it happens in Stockholm, not locally in Berlin.
    - ‎Incompetent people in managerial positions are being kept because they are close to the studio management. It hurts the teams, but nobody says anything because they are nice guys.

    - ‎Lack of creative freedom. Most of the time you will spend cloning features from other titles, because business analysts said so.
    - Business analysts have much more impact on game design than actual game designers.
    - ‎Work here is not about creating great experience for the players, instead it's about squeezing more money from them.

    - Lots of promises to improve upon negative points, but almost no action

    Technology
    - Obsolete game engine and legacy code slow down feature development.
    - ‎Engine team is unable to deliver quality tools.
    - It's really hard to push tasks to decrease the technical debt.
    - ‎Adoption of modern tools and techniques is happening is extremely slow rate.
    - Lack of technical direction. Studio actually hired a Scrum master for the role of Technical Director.
    - Most of work is simple UI changes, or cloning features from other internal titles. So very little learning opportunities.

    Rat an das Management

    - ‎Create a proper balance between data analysis and creative work, or otherwise people who actually creates games will continue leaving the company.
    - ‎Give freedom to game teams, including ability to work on features they believe are good and choose tech on their own.
    - ‎Start listening to feedback that your employees are giving you.

Ich habe in Vollzeit bei King gearbeitet (mehr als ein Jahr)

    Pros

    - Flexible hours, no overtime
    - Nice colleagues and (too?) relaxed atmosphere
    - Decent salary, benefits and office amenities

    Kontras

    - The proprietary game engine they force teams to use is just awful and turns any simple task into a long, unrewarding and frustrating process
    - When you want to leave the company, they'll make it as difficult and painful for you as possible, and in some cases won't even shy away from breaking local laws and regulations
    - Unfair, top-down decision making process; all important decisions are made by upper management based on input from data “scientists”
    - Very low morale and lack of exciting, innovative or creative projects in the Berlin studio
    - Benefits and perks have been incrementally reduced after Activision / Blizzard acquisition
    - Passion for money, not for games

    Rat an das Management

Stop focusing solely on growth and numbers. Allow for true innovation by using decent, industry proven game engines to experiment and fail fast. Retain talent by making the Berlin studio a nice place to work instead of bullying people who decide to leave.

    Neutrale Prognose
    Keine Meinung zu Geschäftsführer

    Pros

I believe that the compensation is at least not below average, and the office facilities and amenities are above average.

    Kontras

King requires a 3 MONTH notice period + a 3 MONTH non-compete period as part of signing up as an employee. King has sever employee retention issues and now aggressively enforces this HALF A YEAR exclusion as a (misguided) way to stem their bleeding. Recently King has even begun to push non-competes on employees going to companies in tangentially related industries, so don't expect to escape by getting out of the gaming industry.

    Rat an das Management

Recognise the hostility towards this company which your business practices will lead to. You are not earning any points in the wider community.

    Pros

    - skilled teams and collegues
    - flexible but professional environment
    - big data access and tons of metrics to act on
    - strong work-life balance
    - decent salaries

    Kontras

    - big ship and long decision processes
    - move towards corporation still in progress
    - ineffective expectation management
    - career options driven by locations rather then skill-sets

    Rat an das Management

    - improve your tech
    - trust your employees and listen to them
    - live what you preach

Ich arbeite in Vollzeit bei King (mehr als ein Jahr)

    Pros

    - Great mood
    - Great people to work with (not technically speaking, I mean)
    - Lots of travel opportunity
    - Beer everywhere
    - Great referral bonus
    - Good work/life balance

    Kontras

    - Lame projects
    - Games gets cancelled at an incredible rate
    - No creative work
    - Good game developers but bad software developers
    - Hardly anything comes from the team. Everybody is forced to follow blue prints from the upper management
    - All games are Candy Crush in a way or another
    - Internal competition to see which project goes through
    - After acquisition, weird talks start to happen in the company: we're to slow, teams are too big, people are comfy and clumsy, lack of focus
    - Lots of middlemen now, called "Directors", that are nothing more than proxies between development teams
    - Teams are forced to use home-developed game engine that is years-light behind the competitors in the market

    Rat an das Management

Please be transparent to the employees: 800% of growth in the last 4 years was just part of the master plan to sell King to another company. It simply doesn't make sense to bloat such an once competitive company, making millions a day to a company that can't barely ship 3 or 4 games per year.

Keeping up with offices that generate no profit just for the sake of avoiding bad press is as bad as closing them. Also, avoid allocate people into projects just to keep them busy: this hurts the projects, as it adds more layers of communication inside the team.

Please give proper training to Game Producers in terms of Agile Process and how a P.O. should do. The lack of technical knowledge is disturbing. Coach Devs on how to proper code following OOP principles, instead of just hacking around legacy code.

Ich arbeite in Vollzeit bei King (mehr als ein Jahr)

    Pros

King hires good people and the culture in the studio I work in is great. People are friendly and welcoming and seem good at what they do - there's a diverse culture with a lot of different perspectives. This is a good place to learn!
You get to travel as well, although it is not mandatory. The offices are fun too and they offer great internal programmes where you can transfer. Good work life balance too.

    Kontras

There is so much growth, which is good and bad. Good because things change frequently and there is good energy, but bad because some of the middle managers have been promoted too quickly. They have grown so fast that people get lots of responsibility quickly, but some of those should not have that responsibility...

    Rat an das Management

Give more training to managers. Mainly on communication
