Ich habe für mehr als 3 Jahre bei Industrial Light & Magic gearbeitet (Vollzeit)

    Pros

Great artists, amazin talents. If you like franchises, really good projects Good for the CV Good salaries There is a will to change things, but things take very long to materialise Some good Disney benefits (free parks entries)

    Kontras

old pipeline artist management is not great contract renewal usually done at the last minute London office doesn't get the same benefits as SF, ILM SF has a long VFX culture that didn't not reach London. uneven quality of supervisors, some are great some are bad They struggle to get new work, which resulted on a massive wave of lay off. More and more work is sent to 3rd party companies. No much space to grow,... limited career development.

    Rat an das Management

There is work in modernising the pipeline but this is moving too slowly. ILM has to find a way to be more competitive. Maybe reduce the number of supervisor, streamline some departments, be more agile with the artists. Be more reactive, everything moves too slowly.

Ich habe für mehr als 10 Jahre bei Industrial Light & Magic gearbeitet (Vollzeit)

    Pros

Generally great people, good projects, nice perks.

    Kontras

Leadership constantly assures staff of commitment to SF location, but bulk of work keeps going to competing divisions in Vancouver and London, and head count continues to go down. As such, management values its talent substantially less these days. No opportunities to advance, and raises have been replaced by meager bonuses. There's been a real disconnect/disinterest in day-to-day artist experiences and... performance by management, reflected by a recent move to eliminate what little performance review system we had. Training program is not what it once was. Just talking to other artists, bad management tendencies, such as favoritism, have become very common. Getting onto the few slots on the hot project has become rather political.

    Rat an das Management

With all the incentives in Vancouver, Montreal, and London, it is admittedly tough running a VFX house in San Francisco. It seems like there's a lot of work in smaller US films that can be done (too small to be worthwhile working overseas?). Management also needs to change its DNA. It doesn't need to get all sweet and cuddly, but it does need to make an effort to really engage with productions/artists more to know... who's really contributing and who isn't.

    Pros

Nice facility. Good projects if you are at the point in your career if you need that stuff for your reel. Good for single people.

    Kontras

Location isn't great. The Presidio is a beautiful park, but its too bad that ILM didn't decide to stay in Marin County. Transit connections is restricted to Presidigo buses to downtown which can take up to an hour to get to a BART train. Traffic is a nightmare in the morning if you are north of San Rafael or have to cross the city. Severe lack of parking at the facility lately. Rent/cost of living in the area is... excessive, a studio apartment that is walking distance to ILM is $3000-4000/mo. Corporate Housing and Long term housing in the area is around $3000 a month. Keep this in mind if you come in on a short contract, they will pay for housing if you push for it. Unlike other tech/media companies, Lucasfilm/ILM wages are generally much lower than some of the dot coms and media firms in the area. However VFX wise there isn't many options at all. Pay is OK on contract, on short contracts you can usually get a much better rate, and typically they are short staffed all the time that you'll be extended a few times at a higher rate. In some cases the contractors are making 1.5-2x the hourly rate of the staff guys sitting next to them. The hours lately are dreadful. 72-80 hour weeks are normal these days as schedules to finish projects are reduced to 3-4 months. Yes there is an on site day care, gym and food, but keep in mind you'll be practically living at your desk around the clock. Advancement can be difficult, I've seen talent slip through their fingers time and time again, mostly due to timing. Someone who was a wizard at a competitor becomes a button pusher at ILM for 3 months then they move on to something a bit more challenging. Personal story, my car pool friends are fried from the long hours. As in forgetting to put the trash out weeks on end, and not taking care of themselves. One friend gained 30 lbs on one movie. Management doesn't care as long as the deadlines are hit. Department feedback/communication is horrible. Doing a good job/bad job? You never know. No news is good news I guess?

Hire more people so you don't have everyone working 7 days a week.

High profile projects. good location and facilities.

    Kontras

    Pros

    - They get A-list projects. - Good pay and benefits. - Some seriously smart and talented people. - Decent hardware and resources. - Located in the city, not the suburbs. - ILM management reasonably open and honest about what's going on. - Great on your resume. - All the Star Wars crap you could ever want.

    Kontras

    - Proprietary software that is sometimes great but often frustrating. - Can be very corporate, especially where parent company (Lucasfilm), legal or HR is involved. - It's big and you can never know everything that is going on. - More Star Wars crap than you could ever want. If you are a software type try and get hired into production rather than the R&D department. They have been turning into a parody of... organizational dysfunction over the last couple of years and you will be happier and have more interesting work in production.

Not much for ILM management - they seem to be doing a reasonable job. Lucas management should get the different divisions to cooperate, or at least communicate, a bit better. The R&D department needs a reboot.
