    Pros

Resources. Support for creative ideas. Researchers pushed to be better managers, supportive of their reports' careers and freedom to pursue interests outside the strict job descriptions. Minimal bureaucratic requirements, allowing more effective working hours, at least for RAs.

    Kontras

Stress can be high at times. High expectations.

    Pros

Lots of R&D pipeline, you're always surrounded with really smart people.

    Kontras

As a contractor, you are treated as an outsider - you don't belong to the company although you are working in Genentech. At R&D, contractors are not allowed to attend group meetings and project meetings even though you are actually assigned on that specific project. You cannot present your data and findings. Moreover, contractors are not invited to company's holiday/outdoor functions. So while everyone is out partying...

    Pros

Smart co-workers, creative department heads and nice cafeteria

    Kontras

Unreasonable expectations and time pressures and management goals detached from reality

Ich habe bei Genentech gearbeitet (Vollzeit)

    Pros

Really great perks, benefits, and pay. They still have the sabbatical program which I loved. Fantastic infrastructure to support research effort which can enable rapid progress. Relative stability since they have many products for sale and a fat pipeline. OUTSIDE of the research unit, seems to be good work/life balance and opportunities for career development.

    Kontras

The original Genentech is gone and has been replaced by a big pharma organization. As such the research effort is becoming increasingly unnecessary to the big picture. Leadership is very risk averse and has gone from a culture of innovation and risk, to one where they only want to do what everyone else is doing. The research unit is underpaid and poorly treated in comparison with other divisions in the organization....

    Rat an das Management

Try some inspirational leadership on for size instead of the culture of no. And why not go ahead and embrace the big pharma model fully instead of pretending to preserve the Genentech culture? Stop being so stingy with promotions, upward mobility, and career development within the research unit and stop treating researchers like you are doing them a favor by letting them work for you.

    Pros

Excellent research, a great boss, fun co-workers, good support departments. Also good transport options, especially if you're full time. Plenty of seminars to attend to keep current in modern research.

    Kontras

Many departments make heavy use of contractors, and it is very rare to go from contract to full time. I have heard of contractors being extended to 3 years, and being kept on as contractor when a full time position was open.

    Rat an das Management

A full time worker will care about their vocation more than a contractor. Of course a contractor is less expensive.

Ich habe bei Genentech gearbeitet ()

    Pros

I was a contractor at their biochem group for 6 month contract. In terms of work experience (challenges, idea exchange), it was good.

    Kontras

But they really draw a demarcation line btw contractor and employee. Contractors cannot join activities like team building meeting and socialization. It really sucked!

    Rat an das Management

Treat your contractors as employee. This will benefit the company too!

    Pros

Flexible work hours, good 401k matching, free shuttle service to work for regular employee, decent health insurance and other benefits, lots of freed food and other small perks such as T-shirts, jackets at work. Great work place if you want stability.

    Kontras

Have been working at Genentech in research > 5years. Worked at three other companies before, including a major pharm for years. Came to Genentech for its reputation, probably should not - I was doing great at last company. What I feel and what I often hear is that Genentech hires the best talents but now very few of these talents can grow at Genentech - so many are leaving in past couple of years. It was better...

    Rat an das Management

Upper management probably should think how to inspire the hired talents to work hard and collaborate here. If it is competitive environment and one talent's work is not supported by other talents, the chance to succeed is lowered. If it is inspiring for more talents and more collaborative, some mishaps or errors could be avoided earlier.
