    Pros

    Good salary. Abundant stock options with the stock price rising considerably. Smart and committed people. Lots of little benefits like on site dentist, car washes and concierge services

    Commercial in general and marketing in particular is very high pressure. Management demands a great deal even though the primary barrier to change is the company's own legal department. Legal is probably right to be very conservative but the leadership in commercial still puts lots of pressure on line marketing and other commercial activities to be "cutting edge" and deliver. There is a culture in upper... management of throwing lower level people under the bus.

    Great company, great culture, fast pace, innovative, risk-takers, pretty open and direct communication style. Mixed PC- & Mac environment, business class travel for intercontinental flights, great support structure

    Kontras

    Passive approach to career development (dogma: "everyone is responsible for her own career"). Can be translated as "the company doesn't help you in your career". It's really difficult to move up or even lateral. Some of the Stanford- & UCSF scientist are super-arrogant and almost refuse to engage in a debate with Non-Ivy League colleagues.

    Company that has the right set of values and goals, good aspirational focus: focused on patient and unmet medical needs. Decent career growth if you fit the culture, very good childcare facilities on campus and good overall employee appreciation events.

    Kontras

    Not enough racial diversity at the most senior levels (senior director and above) and senior management can be myopic in putting people into a box, they brand you (i.e. what you are known for) based on their direct experience as opposed to what you can bring to the table (developing you and your potential).

    Consider adding more non-Caucasian women to your senior ranks in Commercial and MCCO. Still predominantly a Caucasian-based leadership team in these functions.

    Strong company with a strong and growing future, solid leadership in most areas, good benefits and competitive compensation. Great perks known by the Bay Area's top companies.

    Has lost a noticeable amount of the Bay Area fast company feel and culture over the last few year largely due to being integrated into large pharma thinking and practices. Can be difficult to get things done, especially in a global setting. Employee Performance review process and related compensation awards out dated and does not necessarily consistently reward strong performance (ratings a based on a distribution... curve).

    The company has competitive pay, great benefits, management say the right things, and I believe they want to do the right things.

    Management plays favorites with preferred employees in pay and promotion that goes beyond difference is demonstrated skills and tangible contributions. In Finance organization, excessive importance placed on commodity skills of "business partnering." Result is that core technical Finance and Accounting skills are not cultivated, support groups with these skills are small, and all technical work is channeled to... these small groups as few people can or want to do it. Sr. management is more focused on their own self promotion than on developing their organizations.

    Pay attention to the work that happens beyond the Powerpoint slides. This keeps the place running. Core technical, collaboration, and process management skills are the foundation of any good organization, not just of the back office.
