Ich habe in Vollzeit bei FleishmanHillard gearbeitet (mehr als ein Jahr)

    Pros

FH is well resourced and its global reach allows you to provide clients with insights and intelligence beyond what local shops have to offer. Colleagues are fairly clever and occasionally outright talented.

    Kontras

FH is selling it’s employees a lot of nonsense; back in 2013 the corporate slogan was “go beyond” which for employees up to account director level implied “do more for less”.

There’s a seemingly cushy environment which, on the surface, can be fun; young people from all over Europe working alongside eachother in a fast-paced environment. Interesting clients and issues. However, in practice the environment can play out toxic and create loyalty beyond what is healthy; you wouldn’t leave at 6pm if it means your friend ends up staying late, would you?

There is (or used to be) a dichotomy between what the company says and what it ends up doing. Lip service is being paid to ‘the importance of work life balance’ yet overworked employees fall down like apples in autumn.

    Rat an das Management

If ‘the power of true’ is still the slogan; start by being honest to your employees. Pay your juniors a little better and have them work less so they’re not walking around with pale faces in oversized polyester suits. Young people still have to develop an understanding of their limits and the confidence to act on them. Don’t allow company culture to exploit these weaknesses and inexperience. If needed say ‘no’ at their behalf. It will inspire loyalty and save precious human resources.

    Pros

Junior to mid-level staff keep this agency running, cranking out quality work and collaborating well in my experience. In general, my colleagues have been lovely to work with.

    Kontras

Management is very two-faced and it’s led to a morale issue. My office in DC just laid off a handful of folks after insisting the finances were “improving” this quarter. The divide between management and staff is worsening, especially with moves like this.

    Rat an das Management

Don’t promise transparency if you can’t deliver. I have one foot out the door and I’m not alone.

Ich arbeite in Vollzeit bei FleishmanHillard (Über 3 Jahre)

    Pros

Endless career possibilities for sharp, positive, business-minded, communications gurus. Those who bring a champion attitude and are dedicated to being better professionals are rewarded and recognized throughout the organization at all skill levels.

    Kontras

You have to work hard, you have to really think things through before you DO them and come at any situation with an educated perspective. FH can be demanding because clients expect premium work...it's not an environment for someone who isn't interested in hard work but you get back what you put in.

    Rat an das Management

Communicate more openly with all levels of the organization. This has improved with changes in leadership, but anyone who isn't a senior staff member is often left out of conversations about what's going on in the business even though they contribute greatly to the outcomes. There should be a way to distribute the message in a way that's appropriate for all levels of the organization.

Ich arbeite in Vollzeit bei FleishmanHillard (Über 8 Jahre)

    Pros

Like any agency, there’s variety to the work.

As a young person, that variety means a lot of opportunity to work on different kinds of accounts and get experience faster.

The company is consciously trying to be a better employer, and starting employees now get 10 wellness days, 15 vacation days and something like 12 holidays off.

You get to work with people all over the world.

A lot of really nice colleagues.

At least in my experience, good work/life balance for an agency. A lot of people feel differently, but some of that has to be due to their own efficiency.

    Kontras

Who your boss is has more of an impact than it should, with personalities varying.

Having to account for non-billable time is stupid. It’s like clocking in and out, and salaried professionals shouldn’t be treated that way. I know zero other companies that bill hourly and have salaried employees count non-billable hours every single day.

I don’t trust the senior leadership as business people - great PR people, but what about as business people? The periodic lay offs when revenue targets are missed tell me their target estimates are not accurate or they’re hiring too many people or both. Kinda creates a low-level degree of anxiety in the early part of every year.

They don’t give real raises unless you get promoted. A 1% increase a year is just a reminder that moving jobs is the best way to grow your salary.

Getting promoted has less to do with performance than what office you’re in, what department you’re in, whether the corporate parent wants to spend the money, and the attitude of your boss. A lot of 28 year old VPs in some departments/offices and a lot of 35 year old account supervisors in others, and while not a huge problem, some of these people were promoted past their competency. Just lacks fairness and transparency.

    Rat an das Management

There’s widespread discontentment with compensation right now. People know what they contribute in terms of revenue and business development and client satisfaction, but there’s no monetary recognition except for people at the very top. Agency life is demanding, and an agency whose employees are working just to keep their jobs is not the kind of agency people want to work for.

Look at what bureaucracy can be cut. There’s way too much administrative work, and departments sometimes layer more of it on top. Time that could go to billable work or to a better work/life balance.

I have colleagues in my department who talk about struggling to make ends meet at the end of the month. They need to be paid more. My department struggles to keep young people. They have student debt, get two years’ experience at FH and leave for greener pastures, partly out of financial necessity. They like it here and can’t afford to stay.

Ich habe in Vollzeit bei FleishmanHillard gearbeitet (mehr als ein Jahr)

    Pros

FleishmanHillard is a fantastic company. The hours are long and the work is hard - the expectations are also high - but the company and management are wonderful. Your duties and job requirements are clear and management is transparent in your career path. Junior staff members are treated exceptionally well and there are learning opportunities every day. You will also experience a great mix of media relations, social media strategy, crisis communications, and more. FleishmanHillard is a fantastic company and great place to work.

    Kontras

While there are offices throughout the world, it would be nice if the offices worked closer and employees were given opportunities to move to other offices. Promotions are also only done once per year which can be odd as most people are promoted annually with only a few missing out.

    Rat an das Management

Continue to treat junior employees fairly and encourage a learning environment. Consider switching promotion structure to not once a year.
