Ich habe in Vollzeit bei Epic Games gearbeitet (Über 3 Jahre)

    Pros

    Center of technical excellence
    Respected in the industry

    Kontras

    Chaotic, political atmosphere
    Constantly-changing priorities and targets

    Rat an das Management

Listen to your employees and don't filter opinions through management. There is a good amount of "reality distortion" going around because everyone is afraid to disagree with their boss.

Ich habe in Vollzeit bei Epic Games gearbeitet (mehr als ein Jahr)

    Pros

Dream come true. It was my dream to work at Epic Games because 'The Making of Gears of War' DVD is what made me want to work in games. Great facilities, great perks like loads of different free food every day, language classes, awesome relocation support . Lots of interesting, smart people working there. Regular demos to the whole studio with pizza, a lot of fun. Weekly group test sessions with production team and studio lead, very interesting (and lots of fun). Sense of camaraderie. Regular video all hands company calls with Epic HQ.

    Kontras

Old school approach of '1 person decides' instead of tapping into the power and creativity of the group to drive a game in a certain direction. Initiative was seen as a negative, which was shocking but true. In the Polish studio people would switch to Polish mid-meeting until the end of the meeting leaving expats confused. It feels like there is no way to give true feedback on the game (with the game having been managed basically from North-Carolina as far as creative direction/design). Feedback on performance was mainly negative, not much focus on the positives. Communicating with 'higher ups' was a definite no-no, not an open culture.

    Rat an das Management

People join a game company to give their heart to games, they don't mind working hard and even working their way up - but treating them like interns without a voice leads to people leaving or being unhappy, especially expats who are away from home-partners-family. Give ownership to people, trust in them, create ways for feedback to be taken into consideration. Stop beating up people for taking initiative. Ensure all teams stick to English in meetings with expats. Eliminate micromanagement where possible. Keep up all the perks and the culture and having an amazing work environment!

Ich habe in Vollzeit bei Epic Games gearbeitet (Über 3 Jahre)

    Pros

The benefits of working here can't be beat. The company as a whole tries hard to reward you for good work.

    Kontras

The lack of a solid HR department results in a decent amount of sabotage and immature behavior. Company wide, people commonly get in shouting matches instead of remaining professional - this also includes upper management (except Tim Sweeney, he's constantly both kind and professional). It is very common for good employees to get forced into smaller and smaller job positions and suddenly "resign" after rubbing someone the wrong way. This happens so often that HR seems to be unaware that it is going on until after it is too late. There are too many upper level employees who make emotional rather than practical decisions.

Contractors are commonly treated as disposable, even if entire features are built off of a single individual's work. It can be very difficult for a contractor to be converted to full time, and it is common for them to be severely underpaid when they are converted. It is even more common for contractors to eventually leave after being taken advantage of or led on for months or even years.

    Rat an das Management

Invest in a better HR department and start investigating how to prevent the constant emotional and impulsive outbursts. Treat contractors like professionals and not like cattle.

Ich arbeite in Vollzeit bei Epic Games (Weniger als ein Jahr)

    Pros

Easygoing environment, great people, stress-free workflow

    Kontras

Confusing chain of command, consistent boss sick days, less benefits for contractors

    Rat an das Management

Be able to tell your subordinates what tasks they need to do and when. Workers get lost and don't know what to do when tasks pile up and have no where to go.

Ich arbeite in Vollzeit bei Epic Games (mehr als ein Jahr)

    Pros

Studio itself treats you well with great benefits, swag and food.

    Kontras

Middle management (Art Leads) are incredibly over bearing managing every tiny detail of your work. There is absolutely no room for creativity. This is a "do exactly what you are told" studio. People tend to disappear (get fired) for trying to buck that system.

    Rat an das Management

It doesn't matter because it will never change.
