    Kontras

-Rare or no career progression opportunities -Work can become monotonous and boring -Ineffective or no decision making on important matters -Communication from management is very poor -Morale is very low -Staff feel undervalued and underappreciated -Academics rely too heavily on Support Staff -High staff turnover, or lots of vacancies due to staff leaving but are not being replaced due to a 'recruitment... freeze', but they are quite happy to hire more senior management positions -Very unorganized and unstructured -Not forward thinking or progressive - many staff have been there for years and are just waiting for their pension -Huge responsibilities pushed to lower-grade staff without financial compensation or incentive -Pay does not reflect responsibilities and job description -Discrimination based on job title i.e. 'administrators' cannot benefit from home-working policy -Office locations are in undesirable areas i.e. Sighthill -Feels very corporate and like it's being run like a bad business and not an educational institution -Students are unhappy as are the staff -Nontransparent hiring practices for many management positions -PDR process is ineffective and pointless due to lack of career advancement opportunities -Gossiping and bullying due to low morale and demotivated staff -Too much emphasis placed on line managers - HR do not take any responsibility or offer effective advice -Big micromanagement problem and distrust from managers to employees -Pay date varies every month (last Thursday) -In general, managers have a lack of social skills, don't accept their job responsibilities, lack delegation, get involved in menial matters and micromanage, distrust their employees, do not support their team and cannot/are slow to make decisions and often do not explain their reasoning -Constant restructuring -Lack of coherence in departmental responsibilities

    Rat an das Management

Provide progression opportunities to staff. Raise morale. Stop recruiting more senior management positions and recruit more lower-grade staff to deal with the increasing workloads. Have fair HR policies which apply to all staff. Improve communication and transparency. Hire managers who have social skills, can take responsibility, have faith in their staff, can delegate, have confidence and make decisions. Improve... the environments for staff and student experience to make it seem like more of an education institution. Regrade roles which have higher levels of responsibility and recognize that fact. Move the pay date to the same date every month. Encourage ideas and creativity.

Ich habe für mehr als 5 Jahre bei Edinburgh Napier University gearbeitet (Vollzeit)

    Pros

    Flexible working and international outreach.

    Kontras

Staff work extremely hard to be able to keep up with random management decisions. Most of the staff are motivated only to avoid impacting the students' experience but that's it. Management makes impossible decisions and morale is very low. Money is spent in unnecessary items such as the buildings at the Gyle or the refurbishment of the Craiglockhart reception. Mediocre people are constantly being promoted.... There's no career progression for support staff.
