Ich habe für mehr als 5 Jahre bei EF English First gearbeitet (Vollzeit)

    Pros

Great, friendly, professional staff, excellent DOS (Director of Studies), great teacher training sessions and certification opportunities through Cambridge Uni. Cool high tech classrooms. Lots of wonderful students, great kids. Good management. Competitive salary. Excellent EF Co. class books and lesson plans + lots of additional resources. Qingdao is a beautiful coastal city + mountains with comparatively... clean air and water. If my family commitments weren't keeping me in other places i would definitely consider working at EF Qingdao again. I had a very happy 5 years there. My only big complaint was that Private training centers like EF work during Summer and Winter holidays. If it hadn't been for that i might still be working there (except for the 5 year rule (see Cons). I miss the foreign and Chinese staff/teachers and students. Everyone was very nice and friendly. I wish EF Qingdao continued success!

    Kontras

From what I've heard many EF Franchise locations are not run very well, especially from the perspective of the expat foreign teachers, but EF Qingdao is NOT one of those! Some of the students can be terrors and can spoil the class for the rest, trying the most patient teachers' patience. The city of Qingdao has become too strict in its requirements for Foreign teacher's paperwork, sometimes making it hard for... them to stay. Also a 5 years at a time rule is being enforced there (and many other cities in China. Cold, biting wind in winter to rival Chicago or New York's. Only 10 days paid holiday (+ National Holidays). Intensive Summer and Winter Courses left me only one day of per week during those times.

Keep up the good work. More than 10 days paid holiday per year would be nice!

Ich arbeite seit mehr als 5 Jahren bei EF English First (Vollzeit)

    Pros

EF is full of people who are passionate about education, and it's a great place to either develop professionally or to cut your teeth if you're new to the profession. There are really supportive materials with plans provided and loads of supplementary content, but you still have the freedom to get creative and teach your students, not just the syllabus. The onboarding is excellent; you know you'll be taken care of... in terms of getting into the country and setup safe and sound and get on with exploring the country. Particularly in smaller cities, the salary is more than enough to have a very high standard of living and travel extensively. I've learnt so much, have had so many opportunities to develop and grow, and the vast majority of my colleagues over the past few years have extended their stays, moved up through the network of schools or taken up senior positions at other educational institutions, none of which would've been possible without EF's support. You really do get back what you put in - if you expect to come for a holiday, this isn't for you. But if you're motivated about starting or developing a career in education in a new country, EF is an excellent choice.

    Kontras

While everything was spelled out very clearly before I arrived, having to work weekends was certainly restrictive in terms of socializing outside the network of teachers at our school. Summer intensive periods can be very challenging, though you can see great progress from your students which is very rewarding. A comparitively low salary compared to public/international schools, particularly in larger cities.

Promote the development opportunities within the network - teachers moving between schools at the end of the year should be much more common. Provide more financial incentive to retain the best teachers long-term.

Ich habe für mehr als ein Jahr bei EF English First gearbeitet (Vollzeit)

    Pros

Great students - keen and interested to learn. Great camaraderie between teachers, and you make loads of new friends. The career development is good, if you want to stay in China.

    Kontras

The admin work surrounding the job can be a bit tiresome at times. The summer session is a little tough, as it's busier than usual (I worked at the kids and teens school). The turnover of teachers is quite high as contracts are only for a year and a lot of people want to explore different locations

    Rat an das Management

Make sure you listen to teachers!

Ich arbeite seit mehr als 3 Jahren bei EF English First (Vollzeit)

    Pros

You get great satisfaction from seeing your students progress, and you do have a lot of freedom to plan your lessons the way you want to (unlike in the state school system back home!). There's also less admin work than a teaching job back home, too. It is a full-time job, there's no getting away from it, but as long as you're prepared to work hard you'll get on well. Not to mention that in your free time you're... in China!

    Kontras

Sometimes people can be promoted before they're ready. There is a high turnover of staff, but that could be because it's living abroad, not necessarily a reflection on the company.

Pay more attention to suggestions from the teachers at the grassroots level - we've got some good ideas too!
