Ich habe für mehr als 10 Jahre bei Dow Corning gearbeitet (Vollzeit)

    Pros

Used to be a great place to work with a good salary, perks and benefits; in many case with jobs with objectives rather than tasks. highly knowledgeable people and a good mid management. International environment, global business, lots of trainings and a really well organized company.

    Kontras

Dow Corning used to be the milk cow of Dow that was always asking for more dividends to embellish their own results. As a consequence for the last 20 years the management of Dow Corning drove it to a commodity business while pretending still to be a specialty chemicals business. i never saw a company destroying itself so much value without any need or pressure of the market placing good business in a commodity... model just because that was the craze of the day. The stupidity, pressure and/or lack of attention in the implementation of some managers made the fortune of some distributors buying commodities and reselling specialties. Besides pushing and bragging about the commodity business model, reducing year after year costs of service and people to improve the ratios and earnings of the year there was no vision, even less objectives nor an underlying strategy to develop the technologies and the products of the next decade. In the last years the company was run by a bean counter who had no cue of what silicone chemistry was all about. The only message year after year was to "do X% more with Z% less" to improve shareholders (Dow) dividends. But the commoditization brought only dwindling results and there was not enough (if at all) new products to take over and improve margins leading to yet another cost (and people) reduction and yet even less chances for next gen products. I observed so many cases when cost reductions had priority over continuing profitable business. Management also followed and implemented recommendations of big consulting firms which wrote the GOSPEL of the year, changing to a different direction every 3-5 years. This was the THRUTH even if disconnected with the reality of the silicone business as it was paid so dear for it while the free feed back, knowledge and experience of people in front of customers or specialists of their markets were ignored. Maybe under Dow that is absorbing Dow Corning, it will stabilize as a commodity business. But to be a specialty chemical company again. that will be hard at least for the next decade as there is not enough in the pipe.

    Rat an das Management

Focus on commoditization and that is it. Or put in a CEO and other top level managers who have knowledge of the potential of the silicone specialty business. Get them to have a vison with objectives for technologies and markets to be in in the next decade (as it take at least that to understand market needs, then to get from lab to commercialization). Ask dept managers and their teams to build strategies ( = a... set of coordinated tactics to reach the objectives) with means, people, and managers that are there till success, not moving every 3 years. (otherwise they erode each time their knowledge and get averse to any risk, just waiting to be in the next position) Use a stage gate process to drive that development. Silicon and silicone chemistries have still so much potential.
