    Professional Development training: how to address conflict, how to ask students and colleagues for clarity, how to explicitly and clearly explain information, mock interview training. Learning about the school system and getting to experience and witness the day to day functions of a school. Getting to know and work closely with students.

    Long hours. You receive a stipend instead of salary which usually requires working a second job or living stretched thin financially. Transportation can be difficult. Managers and directors are stretched thin. Have little time to support you. Teams can be lazy and disgruntled with the work after finding out what they will actually be doing which makes being representatives of the organization difficult. Hours... requirements and time off policy are not explained clearly. Usually told of changes or requirements very late.

    Pros

    People who work for City Year have their heads on straight. They love what they do and are dedicated to making a difference in this world. City Year offers a great gateway into academia and offers a lot of professional development. There are a lot of celebrations and City Year really does focus on making everyone feel included and special. Health insurance is included, covers a lot and has a very low deductible.

    Pay is low due to the non-profit nature of the work. Service is stressful and seemingly impossible at times. Sometimes it's frustrating to know that not every individual operates through the values of City Year, even though it's presented as they do. Sometimes people are too overwhelmed/bogged down with responsibilities to respond/get critical information out.

    Its a year of service for you to work with kids who are in under-resourced areas and also a reason to give back to the community also you get paid off a stipended.

    Working with City Year for two years has given me the opportunity to learn more about different communities across the nation and work on my professional and teamwork skills. They want to ensure that you are able to do the service you signed up to do and have avenues to help you succeed along the way. City Year makes you put things into perspective and creates an understanding of service that brings a lot of impact... on one's experience.

    Depending on which site you serve at, there almost no clear expectations to what your role entails. Communication can be off and, at times, provide little support while upping your workload. Nothing is ever set in stone and you have to be willing to be flexible at all times.
