Ich habe bei City Year gearbeitet (Vollzeit)

    Pros

The work is meaningful. People on the ground are doing incredible work.

    Kontras

There's a lot of transition and a lack of institutional knowledge at the executive level. The culture is often toxic with policies being made up in reaction to a problem and then ignored depending on the circumstance. There's no clear vision from the ED.

    Rat an das Management

Take some time to truly understand the work and the people doing it.

    Pros

Strong culture including team and family Room for promotion

    Kontras

Overworked Too much power in a small group of people. Directors could make or break a site.

    Rat an das Management

Listen to the unique people you hire. No one has figured out how CY works perfectly so stay open to suggestions.

Ich habe für mehr als 3 Jahre bei City Year gearbeitet (Vollzeit)

    Pros

diverse with a great sense of community. Great organization for young people just starting out in their careers.

    Kontras

Pay could be better but it is a non-profit but it is to be expected. There is some disconnect between the expectations of HQ and the different sites.

Ich arbeite bei City Year ()

    Pros

The team. The organization's mission and values attract a lot of great people who are very committed to supporting students, each other and the community. Many working at the national headquarters and leading sites have been around for 20+ years and are very committed to the organization. Most are approachable and willing to help - you don't need to work here for a few years in order to get a seat at their table.... There is often a lot of autonomy to take on special projects and/or to work independently. This works well when you have a unique issue at your site or school that won't be met by the typical resource - you can customize it to what you need without a lot of red tape. There is a lot of positive momentum building. The model changed a few years ago, and the resources and support is finally catching up. This will allow sites to work more efficiently and (hopefully) increase their impact in schools. A lot of work is taken off of site's shoulders by HQ, which is especially helpful when at a smaller site or when new to the role.

    Kontras

Pay is relatively low and often inconsistent across individuals. I've worked with people in the same position with the same about of experience but who earned over $5,000 more or less than each other. There are very few opportunities to increase this, so starting high is key in order to stay in a decent range. Hours can be tough. When there are issues the expectation is to work around it, even if it takes all... night or weekend, rather than realign priorities. People frequently burn out. The amount of coaching and staff development varies widely by site. I've seen some that offer frequent opportunities for staff to grow through formal training programs / sessions or special projects. Others expect staff to learn and grow on their own with little guidance.

    Rat an das Management

Departments at the top (HQ) need to collaborate and align their goals / areas of focus to avoid steering sites in opposite directions at the same time. Invest in staff and that investment will trickle down to corps members or risk poor morale and staff retention. Provide opportunities for 360 evaluations.

Ich habe für mehr als 5 Jahre bei City Year gearbeitet (Vollzeit)

    Pros

I worked at CYNY for a number of years and had a lot of great career development opportunities. Upward mobility is definitely a plus and you will work with some incredible people.

    Kontras

The organization is in flux with a lot of staffing and culture shifts, which can make it hard to maintain a positive culture on the staff level. Corps Members are always tough to manage but they teach you a lot.

    Rat an das Management

I'm not sure I have any really good advice... just focus on staff retention and make it clear that there is a vision and a plan despite a lot of unknowns for the direction of the organization.

    Pros

    - Fantastic, competent people - Important mission - Idealist environment and culture of celebration

    Kontras

    - Lack of work life balance - Low compensation - Lack of professional standards

    Rat an das Management

Our leadership are overachievers and excellent, but we try to grow so quickly that some systems are built poorly and managed poorly by incompetent staff. Salaries are too lot to retain top talent, especially at sites.
