    Pros

    The people. The continuous challenges. Opportunities.

    The only constant is change. Which can be a good thing, but there's been change bordering on turmoil and upheaval in the past 4 years.

    Rat an das Management

    While employees understand the need for change and improvement, constant RIFs and layoffs, as well as the closing of a large office (San Francisco) make employees feel that Cengage is an unstable environment. As a result, a lot of good and talented people leave to try to "beat the next big layoff." Some terrific talent has been lost. Isn't there a better way to try to realign the good people, move them into other necessary roles? There is a strong feeling of instability and uncertainty running as an undercurrent throughout the company. The people who celebrate longtime anniversaries are viewed as oddities and dinosaurs. That's the only big negative about Cengage.

    Pros

    The company really does care about students and making learning affordable. The have a decent work/life balance environment.

    Kontras

    Some of their business decisions are short-sighted, so there are a lot of reorgs, which result in layoffs.

    They are starting to pull back on the ability to work remotely, which may limit their ability to attract and retain quality talent.

    Bring in a change management consultant. With so much going on, you need it if you are going to keep wonderful your culture intact.

    Pros

    -Cengage culture is positive and strong. The mission to help students experience the joy of learning is something we can all get behind!
    -Upper-level management is very transparent about change and is developing a more flexible/agile workforce.
    -Company is trying to understand the learning preferences of the modern student to re-develop our content to meet their needs, while also empowering educators who have increased demands.
    -Cengage has become more data-driven and sophisticated in its product development, marketing, technology implementation, and overall services provided to customers. This helping us experience revenue growth and digital growth (customers opting for online learning versus print textbooks).

    Kontras

    -Change is absolutely constant here, as it is everywhere. Recently the San Francisco office closed and some jobs were moved to other hubs. This decision made business sense but had many personnel implications. It was hard to say goodbye to some longtime employees. Yet other jobs were opened up and a number of new promotions/transfers occurred in the Higher Ed space. That was bittersweet.
    -In general, employees are being asked to handle much more, often with less resources, so that we hit our bottom line. People are adjusting to new assignments and some will not be staying on their former pet projects in a predictable way. This causes some anxiety, but change is often good for the business long-term. Most people are trying to roll with it and be flexible.

    Help us navigate change as people adjust to new roles and responsibilities. If roles and goals are not well defined, then people lack confidence.

    Like working at a miserable cult with a slew of kool aid pushers and drinkers!!!!

    Friendly coworkers. Good health insurance.

    Kontras

    Underpaid. Broken bonus system that results in little to no actual bonus. Windowless cubicle-prison environment. Undertrained. Won't pay out earned vacation time if you leave.

    If you can't pay folks more, then make the job easier on employees. Be more flexible. Allow folks to work from home. You'd see much better results and significantly happier employees.

    Pros

    They have decent benefits.
    They hire felons.
    They hire "special needs" people through Project Search.
    They have ample job opportunities in many fields.
    They have quarterly bonuses.

    Kontras

    They have a "point system" for attendance that is NOT documented so that you are able to keep track of it yourself. Mistakes ARE made and attendance is the number one reason used to terminate employment.
    What effects the bonuses is NOT documented. So you really have no clue what you may or may not end up with.
    Communication between shifts and management is not great.
    They is definitely favoritism shown.
    The warehouse is ran by a husband/wife team.
    The pay is little be desired. Prepare to live paycheck to paycheck as they barely keep up with similar companies.
    When I first started at Cengage, we had mass over time during peak seasons (100+hrs/year), which helped to compensate for the at-best average pay. They "eliminated" OT but expect you to stay over when they tell you right before your shift is about to end - to stay for maybe 5 hours of OT a year now. This conflicts with a lot of people's seconds jobs that they had to pick up in order just to make it pay check to pay check.

    COMMUNICATE with your employees! We want to know what's going on! And we would like to feel a little more valued/appreciated! A pat on the back goes a long way when you work in a HOT exhausting
