    Pros

At Cepheid you can feel that everyone is true to the mission and culture. Everyone is polite, open and friendly. The work that I do is unique and has high level visibility to the company so it is meaningful. I have had many conversations about my role and career goals with my manager and manager +1 to understand if I am engaged and happy with my role. I like my job and I like how understanding my team is. They... recognize good workers and reward them. The president does hold all hands meetings that include overall company updates.

    Pros

Highly educated people Coworkers were great to work together Good training

    Kontras

*Inefficient systems *Too many certifications (60 certs, are you insane) *Need to work on their Silicon Valley culture *Need to be more innovative on Engineering projects (Kaizen is not about innovation it is about waste reduction). *Need to give more project ownership to technical people and reduce micromanagement. *Faster is not better if you are running sideways. *Too much fancy management talk. KISS... principle: work sometimes is just work, keep it to the real goals. Remember to check what is being done is value added.

The reason for the title “Twilight zone” is that in my long career I have not come across a company as strange as Cepheid. I am not the one who coined the title, it was a coworker that also struggled with the situations he would encounter. Cepheid is in the Twilight Zone for many reasons: 1) High turnover: understand how to retain talent like the other great Silicon Valley Companies. 2) Engaging work: ... Talented engineers want to solve technical problems and not do documentation running around getting a long list of approvals for the smallest of design changes. Simplify the qualification, ECO, and design review process. Kaizens are not about innovation; they are for waste reduction. Kaizen on top of Kaizen is also not going to make real change. Infrastructure change is needed in this case. Just make work less complicated and more streamlined, and things fall into place. 3) Create a Silicon Valley work culture. Not sure how Cepheid missed this idea being in the heart of SV. Put trust in the employees to do the job the best they know how. This creates ownership and pride in work. Not sure why some managers are overly focused on accountability and policing. It felt like being in the military. Yes sir may I do another push up. 4) Daily Management: Stop focusing on how to squeeze time for the charted tasks and losing sight of the project itself. Yes, it is the easy and fun part for a manager. Projects should be looked at not only on a tactical but strategic level. It is not about coloring in charts and making lists for the sake of filling up a DM board. 5) Busy work: there are way too many tasks that do not add value. 6) Inefficiency: Cepheid has the highest number of managers per engineer and the most engineers per project of any company I have worked. And yet real technical progress is small. Yes, lots of document creation. More managers do not make for a better company, it causes silos and communication inefficiency, and worst of all empire building. A flatter organization is more efficient from my experience. 7) Innovation: look outward to the competition and startups all trying to get a piece of the diagnostics market. There are startups already looking to change the game: simpler cheaper more convenient medical testing. 8) Manager need to understand what they are managing: tactical as well as strategic. Make clear company goals, try to stick to them unless it no longer makes business sense. Again, playing manager for the fun part is not doing your job. It is not about coloring charts, never ending action item lists, brainstorming an action item for every scenario, regurgitating priorities at every meeting, and doing everything fast. Faster is not better if you are running sideways. 9) Coach and mentor not evaluate and mandate: be a partner in adding value not an impractical controlling master. 10) Now that I have started a new job my wife keeps asking me what happened at work (expecting the daily drama I used to have). I keep saying everything is great, my manager understands what I am working on and gives me the space to work. I have time to focus, and decide how to solve problems, and I am more productive (what a surprise). I have pride in my work. My weekends are for enjoying instead of stressing about the coming Mondays. No more running in circles to satisfy the constant micromanaging, and ball and chain action item lists that keep me from thinking of my own solutions and maybe actually solving the root cause of the problem. It has been a strange feeling getting back to what I have known in all my career before Cepheid. Cepheid almost had me believing their way was normal as some managers professed it like the word of god. Now out from under the spell, I have left the Twilight Zone. I am now awakened to be creative, productive, and just plain happy!
