    Lots of opportunity for juniors to cover stocks and meet investors moving up quickly if motivated. Well respect on the European continent and good deal workflow.

    Lacks global recognition of bulge bracket. Can make it hard to move to large buy side institutions that best American banks have access to . Tier 1 hedge funds etc.

    Pros

    As someone who has been doing this a long time, its great to have management who don't operate a bum on seat policy. As long as the goods are produced, they are relatively relaxed about where you are, what you are wearing etc etc. Its far from a holiday camp but the work life balance feels better than at the bulge brackets

    Suspect junior people would benefit from more training. Quite a hire and fire environment - turnover feels higher than normal .. do not apply if you do not think you can deliver the goods

    Pros

    Travel policy. Well maintained office. Good people 'on the ground'. Strong UK conference presence. New IT equipment. Good office location.

    Management is nepotistic and insecure in the extreme, with emotionally-driven reactions and a determination to ensure subordinates remain in their place. This is not an environment to foster career and personal growth sadly unless you are in the tight inner circle of favourites. Career progress has little bearing on personal merit or contribution. Political relationships are the hard currency of Berenberg. Longer... standing senior employees choose to ignore injustices around them for fear of personal repercussions. The extraordinary headcount growth over the past three years places Berenberg's departments alongside bulge brackets by size. It is clear that management is now firmly out of its depth in terms of people management. "Our model adopts a lower fixed element but we pay you whatever we want at bonus time!" Don't believe it. It translates to graduate levels of variable remuneration for experienced hires. Many are hired through non-traditional backgrounds and don't know better. Many do and were in sheer disbelief.

    Pros

    Generous annual leave and good benefits. Friendly front office. Occasional visit to Hamburg. A lot of nice people depending on team you are in.

    A lot of loose wheels on this kart. You have a whole technology management team without any financial experience and it shows. No direction. Miles behind any competitor technically. Personally the worst choice in my career was going here. I wouldn't recommend in the strongest way. You will loose a lot of skills especially in the trading support dept. Which has a sub culture of long term members stemming from Hamburg... office and new team members who are made to feel like absolute juniors within the team. Very degrading

    Don't compensate London tech staff compared to Hamburg counterparts. it's a completely different compensation model here. So you have taken away any promotions and made a flat structure going forward. How you going to motivate someone?

    Pros

    There are some nice people working here. Offices in London on Threadneedle Street are nice and well positioned. Above a certain level of seniority the travel policy is generous. The sales team is good and engaged.

    Kontras

    The business model of the Equities business is to try to pick up people who are distressed and vulnerable. Hence they try to take advantage of people who have been made redundant, women who tend to negotiate less well and also new mothers who may have suffered confidence setbacks. The pay is well below market rate and the bonus pool is very much tilted towards a select few who ingratiate themselves to senior... management. If you are not part of that crowd you can forget getting paid properly. The bonus won't offset the lower base salary. Buying into the growth story is a fallacy as you won't benefit from the expansion, if anything, it will be dilutive to the bonus pool and your returns. Hence anyone who is actually good tends not to stay there more than a couple of years. Management is tyrannical, indiscreet and prone to irrational, emotional outbursts.
