    Pros

Only large hospital for its region, so clinical experience is highly varied and interesting. Medical community is strong overall, and various specialties tend to get along. Doctors not intensely supportive of each other but not malevolent. One can make professional friends. Various hospital and Hampden medical society meetings are good. Medical library support at Baystate is good. Patients tend to be thankful... for their care. If you work at Baystate long enough, you will develop a sense that this is a hospital (including the outlying ones) that is embedded in its community in a positive sense. The variety of the patients is probably the most gratifying part of the experience of working here. The diversity of the community creates a positive experience for the physician staff. It is hard to compare the benefits with other institutions, but they are probably average to slightly above average overall, except the vacation time is probably a bit less than other places for those at a senior level. Note that salary and benefits should be compared to the regional cost of living, which is lower than many comparable places. Surrounding towns are good places to have a family, some good schools, lots to do in terms of culture (notable: Springfield Symphony, Tanglewood, MassMOCA, Clark Art, UMass Fine Arts Center, college museums, Wadsworth Atheneum, NEPR radio, WGBY television, Northampton for foodies) and outdoor recreation, good access to road and rail to go to Boston, New Haven and NYC.

    Kontras

Too much management, and too many managers who don’t know what the physicians do and how to aid them in their mission of medical care. A top-down system, a nursing-service-dominated system. There is the affiliated medical school, but you likely will have no contact with the students nor any inquiry from medical school administration about what you do or could contribute. System of academic ranking and promotion... in this branch of the University of Massachusetts is difficult. Also, there have been concerns about advancement for women physicians and those of minority background. You will likely teach residents, who tend to be average in their abilities, not stellar. You may have ideas about research, teaching or developing an academic presence through medical societies and presentations, but you will be under the productivity microscope as your primary concern. The average young physician who comes to Baystate does so for secondary reasons (not because they are going to work in a department that is the best in the US and then become a stellar professor over time), stays for some time, acquires skills and experience, then moves on to greater challenges and advancement. Within departments, the paradigm is not to promote from within, so your advancement opportunities will be limited. Clinical chairs have often promised time for special projects, but have been known to disavow such opportunities when there is pressure to cover a clinic or call schedule. Mentoring for new or young physicians is average to below average, and the onboarding process can be disjoint and frustrating. Ultimately, this is a very “corporate” healthcare system, where they want physicians who are quiet, diligent, caring and with good clinical skills, but who listen to management and don’t make waves.

    Pros

Some great co-workers. Large health system that allows for care across the spectrum from small community hospital to large trauma center.

Ich habe bei Baystate Health gearbeitet ()

    Pros

Baystate clinical is slowly changing / improving. Nice people and passionate about their work and patient care. Training and Development and D&I initiatives are adding much value.

    Kontras

Draconian practices and thinking. Dated and unpleasant work environment. Support Services employees are miserable due to dysfunctional leaders - some have been working there way too long

    Rat an das Management

Time to do some house-cleaning in HR. Better support and understanding for clinical areas like Nursing. Provide better and updated working environments with at least SOME basic need amenities.
