Ich habe in Vollzeit bei BMW of North America gearbeitet (Weniger als ein Jahr)

    Pros

You will experience so many things as far as events & meeting people.
    Pay is great

    Kontras

If you are not in management chances are you’re on a contract. Management does not take responsibility for any of their actions and prefer that you suck up. If you complain in this company you will be fired. Most senior positions in the company as with any German company are allotted to German speaking people. They created a diversity team but some teams in the company are still not diverse.

Ich habe in Vollzeit bei BMW of North America gearbeitet

    Pros

You get to drive cool cars and there's great health benefits.

    Kontras

Horrible culture- many germans in managerial roles who don't understand US market or US culture. Unfriendly and don't recognize hard workers or good talent. that's why all smart people run a couple years into job.

    Rat an das Management

Recognize hard workers, make decisions and have a clear strategy/vision and communicate it from the top down. If you don't take care of your employees, the company will not succeed.

Ich habe in Vollzeit bei BMW of North America gearbeitet (Über 3 Jahre)

    Pros

    - Lunch and learns every week, where someone demos new technology or explains their project
    - Beer Friday social hour every other week
    - Decent employee car lease program

    Kontras

    - Low pay with less than less than 3% annual cost-of-living increases.
    - In the Chicago office there's a "good old boy" managerial structure, consisting largely of managers who came from the failed acquisition of Nokia by Microsoft in 2014 and subsequently joined BMW. Unless you can befriend these people you won't rise up in the organization.
    - Proprietary technology stack with BMW headunits that's not transferable anywhere
    - Team structure is a mess. Multiple teams and contractor teams work on one iOS project, leading to a lot of meeting overhead, miscommunication, architecture problems, and spaghetti code. Contractors get things done sloppily, leave, and you'll be there to clean up their mess. There are weekly meetings between senior engineers of each team, but as an individual contributor you'll remain in the dark.
    - Product owners lie to executives in Munich HQ and overcommit to new features, and as a result, you'll have to work overtime on the weekends every 2-3 months to meet your deadlines. I've never had to do this in other companies.
    - No budget for QA staff, so you'll be forced to play both roles and do manual testing.
    - You'll also be forced to carry a work phone off hours and serve an on-call rotation for any AWS/Azure system failures every 6-8 weeks. Again, I've never had to do this elsewhere.
    - Rigid company structure means getting approval for new equipment or a small thing like unblocking a site takes weeks and a chain of multiple approvals.
    - Looking from the consumer's point of view, the value proposition of the product just isn't there. The mapping backend uses an infrequently updated version of Here Maps and traffic comes from INRIX. POIs and accurate time-to-leave notifications that are present in Google Maps & Waze are simply worse or don't exist in this backend. A major feature is being able to send addresses to your car, but why would any car consumer pay thousands of dollars for an extra tech package just to use this? BMW doesn't want to cede control to Apple or Google to preserve their own tech experience, but their paid offerings compared to free Carplay/Android Auto/Google Maps/Waze is just worse.

    Rat an das Management

Given everything else I've said, checkout the reviews of the BMW Connected app in the Apple or Android app stores to see the lack of quality in the engineering and how many unsatisfied costumers there are. As an engineer, I never really believed in the vision of the mobile app or Hazard Preview.

In short, the Chicago tech office likes to pretend that they're a cool and scrappy startup, without any real perks of a startup like a flat organizational structure or stock options. There are many better places in Chicago to work for.

Ich arbeite in Vollzeit bei BMW of North America (Über 3 Jahre)

    Pros

    - Good amount opportunities to move up / onward if youre willing to work on completely different topics either locally or in Munich / other satellite offices
    - Great work environment / people. A lot of cool perks like being surrounded by vehicles that dont come out for another year or two.
    - Endless opportunities for responsibilities, if you're willing to constantly step up and put yourself in the spotlight. BMW of NA is a satellite office of ~900 people, that cover all the topics for the HQ in Munich Germany.. So a lot of knowledge is passed through and there's usually a lot of cracks that need to be filled to make sure work gets done smoothly. If you're willing to take it on, it looks great on your resume.
    - FUN! You're working with some of the most fun to drive vehicles, friends and family will be in awe of the topics youre in direct support of

    Kontras

    - If you're not the ambitious type, put in any less than your 100%, and dont want to move to a different state or country, you could be sitting in a contracting position doing the same work for 7 years, getting 3% raise each year.
    - Contractors clearly dont hold value to the company, no matter how good you are. You need to be in a position where you're the only one that knows what you know in order to have some sort of value, but even that is most often not enough to get you promoted to work for BMW directly, non-contracting. Turn around for most entry-level contracting positions is 2 to 3 years, with most leaving for different companies.
    - Salaries across automotive seem to be very non-competitive = lower pay for the area / job responsibilities
    - No start-up type work perks that you're seeing in a lot of tech-based companies nowadays; e.g. holiday parties are usually once a year and are pretty lame (probably since you have to drive home from Woodcliff Lake afterwards), no summer beer parties, no cool 'hang out' lounges in the office, hours are pretty strictly 9-5.
