    Pros

The people working there are driven. It is filled with alot of smart people who want to do the right thing. You can work remotely and flexibly and take time to focus on your family. Good approach to worklife balance.

    Kontras

very strong culture. Some might say Too strong. Everyone starts speaking the same way and believing the same thing. There is lip service to feedback and speaking truth to power but it is not that way in practice. Director has alot of emphasis on rituals and storytelling. Too many crossed boundaries and unhealthy behaviors.

    Rat an das Management

You are not a cult yet. Do not let it become one. Get it together.

Ich habe in Vollzeit bei Avaaz Foundation gearbeitet

    Pros

Smart people, who mean well in the world
    Good campaigns, sometimes impact

    Kontras

Slowly descended into deep cultish behaviors. Either you believe, or get out.
Exec leadership would not listen to any feedback. Their approach was to shine mirror back on any person with any valuable feedback
Campaign quality has dropped significantly in recent years

    Rat an das Management

Realize you have a problem with feedback.
Get a proper governance structure to keep the organization focussed on delivering towards the mission and not let the CEO go rouge with members' money.
Be more inclusive of people who think/look/say things different to you

Ich habe in Vollzeit bei Avaaz Foundation gearbeitet (mehr als ein Jahr)

    Pros

Smart and open-minded people, great to work with. International environment, great job flexibility (work from wherever you want). Fascinating subjects, have agency on the issues in the world. Very professional management, especially for the NGO-sector.

    Kontras

Requires full commitment and passion for the job (not really a con, just good to know).

Ich habe in Vollzeit bei Avaaz Foundation gearbeitet

    Pros

Some of the best people in the world work here. They care about their work and each other. You might find this one of the most rewarding places you've ever worked.

    Kontras

They have a very specific work culture and it isn't for everyone. Don't fake your way through the interview process and ask lots of questions.

    Pros

Seriously, it's unlike anywhere else I've ever worked. Everyone is constantly thinking creatively, being pushed (in a good way), and working towards a shared goal.

    Kontras

It can be exhausting. Not the kind of place you just clock in/clock out.

    Rat an das Management

    Chill out.

    Pros

    - There's a lot of hope for the world here. Not naive dumb hope, but smart and considered. I find cynicism really draining (and tempting), and there's just not much of it at all.
    - There's very few limits on what Avaaz can do in working to change the world. You might have an amazing idea to change the world that costs $1.5 million dollars - it could be raised and actioned within a week.
    - The team is AMAZING. Such lovely people! So good at getting stuff done, and being considered and mature professionals. No drama here.
    - You grow a tonne. I expected to be here for a few years, learn all there was to learn, and the go elsewhere. But the learning never stops. The leadership training is the best i've seen, management the same, strategy, writing etc etc.
    - It's tactically agnostic, meaning, the team takes problems in the world and works out ways to solve them. Rather than only doing reports, or petitions, or lobbying, or stunts. It's really liberating!

    Kontras

    - It's intense. Working on the most pressing issues gets tiring. If there's a big event, like the Paris climate talks, the team works hard and you will get tired.
    - You have to manage yourself well. For example - the team values feedback, and everyone is giving it to you and asking for it. At some point it's going to touch a sore spot and that's tough. It's also a great learning opportunity. So it depends on the individual. Same with work life balance - the team has a no nonsense policy about it and you need to be excellent at signing off on time/ cutting tasks you can't get done in your time etc. But managing that is your responsibility and if you have bad habits from past jobs it's tough to turn around.
    - Remote work. Working from the Africa/ EU or Sth/Nth American timezones is pretty easy for me. There are so many people online to chat with. But if you love woking in person with your colleagues, and there's not others people in your area, it might be tough. Working from other timezones is harder, and will require a lot of effort from you to reach out to others etc.

    Rat an das Management

    Keep it rolling.

Ich habe in Vollzeit bei Avaaz Foundation gearbeitet (Über 5 Jahre)

    Pros

Relevant, global, mission-driven with a phenomenal culture and group of people to work with. Virtual office and results-oriented management style. Felt like being part of an elite sports team trying to save the world. Hopeful outlook.

    Kontras

Many quick, 'nimble' changes in priorities. Very broad scope sometimes led to doing too many things, and sometimes there was an unwillingness to consider industry best practices and instead opt for 'we can do it better'.
