    Pros

    What I love about working at Avaaz is that its culture also fits my personal culture - and lots of things that I have learned through the work I can easily apply to my personal life. You have the smartest and sweetest colleagues around the world, flexibility and understanding (and I am a mom of two small kids), and exciting work that meets the challenges that the world is facing right now.

    Since Avaaz is a global movement, its employees are spread around the world, so most of them work on a freelance contract - that means some benefits like health insurance are not covered.

    You can't shrug off nearly 20 resignations in just a few months as a season of departures or shedding skin as if Avaaz was a snake. If it was - you haven't just shed some old scales - you've lost your head!     Remote working, very talented co-workers, relatively unlimited resources for good ideas, and depending on where you live pay/vacation days are better than average.

    Vast majority of team members are smart, kind, and driven by the desire to make the world better. Great work life balance.

    Impossible to explain here what has been happening over the last few years (slowly) and the last few months (rapidly)... it’s surreal. Echoing from recent posts: emotionally manipulative, CEO with unchecked power, tons of gaslighting. Once I committed to leaving, I started watching documentaries on cults to help understand what just happened. It was extremely helpful.

    Listen to feedback to learn (even - especially? - when you don't agree), not to tell others why they are wrong. I worry you are blind to, and trapped by, your own "model minority" narratives. Appreciate everyone's individual personality and experience. There are a multitude of ways to connect and inspire, not just the ways that make sense to you.     Majority of staff are warm, highly skilled and intelligent people who work hard, are passionate, dedicated to doing good in the world. Amazing support for work life balance. Many high impact campaigns. Avaaz has done, and is capable of doing, much good in the world.

    The org culture (valuing feedback, transparency, and respect for all staff) does not function how it is meant to and has recently led to an increasingly toxic work environment where a lot of people have experienced gaslighting. It is an extremely top down culture with an unhealthy emphasis on alignment with the CEO, and encouragement of blurred boundaries between personal and professional. It’s exhausting, unnecessary...

    Greater accountability and checks of power for CEO and other leadership are desperately needed to make this a comfortable and healthy work environment for people. Get back to a legitimate meritocracy, not an emphasis on cultural alignment with leader.

    - Overwhelmingly positive caring people - Mostly global mindset (but still overwhelmingly white and privileged) - Learned a lot about myself and lots of soft skills

    - Large disconnect between what leadership says they want and what they cultivate around ideas, meritocracy, and feedback - The strong (boarding on cultish) culture that is both liberating and stifling at the same time

    Continue to hire junior people and train them to what you want. But also look back at former staff and see when they were most successful – before, after, or during their time at Avaaz. I think most staff have been most successful while not at Avaaz. Ask yourself why?

    Creative people as co workers, meaningful campaigns, lots of room for innovation.

    Too much of a megalomaniac routine for the CEO, the Deputy Director and some of the Campaign Directors. Really, talking about nimbleness, relax for a bit, you do not own the universe (nor the truth).

    flexible workplace, some really amazing people, global outlook

    Kontras

    The culture at Avaaz is damaging, invasive, manipulative and used to justify favoritism. They're outright hostile and bullying if you don't agree and conform to a certain way of thinking. A chosen few are provided with all of the opportunities. The campaigns are shallow and usually limited to sending one email. Very dependent on partner organisations who receive very little credit and often are not treated well.

    Pros

    The people working there are driven. It is filled with alot of smart people who want to do the right thing. You can work remotely and flexibly and take time to focus on your family. Good approach to worklife balance.

    very strong culture. Some might say Too strong. Everyone starts speaking the same way and believing the same thing. There is lip service to feedback and speaking truth to power but it is not that way in practice. Director has alot of emphasis on rituals and storytelling. Too many crossed boundaries and unhealthy behaviors.

    Smart people, who mean well in the world Good campaigns, sometimes impact

    Slowly descended into deep cultish behaviors. Either you believe, or get out. Exec leadership would not listen to any feedback. Their approach was to shine mirror back on any person with any valuable feedback Campaign quality has dropped significantly in recent years

    Realize you have a problem with feedback. Get a proper governance structure to keep the organization focussed on delivering towards the mission and not let the CEO go rouge with members' money. Be more inclusive of people who think/look/say things different to you
