    Pros

Amec, though they have acquired other companies have tried, sometimes unsuccessfully, but persistently to build a new identity for the company which integrates the cultures of all the companies they have acquired. If employees buy into the vision of Amec Foster Wheeler, they can build a very successful career. Amec is not unlike many other very large engineering consultancies, with the attendant red tape and... bureaucracy, but you will not escape that if you want to build your career with a company of this size. Overall a great place to work.

    Kontras

The IT department is Broken. Period. It is a mess, and they keep recycling old hardware that doesn't function correctly. Employees who are using substandard technology that hinders them in doing their day to day tasks may wait months before they get a new laptop and the new laptop might be not much better than the old one. New employees get recycled laptops or desktops and it is embarrassing to hire an employee... and then make them wait weeks to get a computer. This one issue is a thorn in Amec's side and they will begin to lose people over it. It doesn't matter how good your corporate intentions are; if you can't even get basic technology right, your organization will suffer, and Amec FW is suffering now.

    Rat an das Management

Fire whoever is in charge of the mess in IT and hire people who have a clue about the need for solid hardware systems and how badly you sap an employee's effectiveness and motivation by forcing them to work with outdated, borderline broken equipment. If someone asks for a new hammer don't hand them a 20 year old pipe wrench.

    Pros

The Edmonton geotechnical group is a well-rounded team with strengths across many disciplines. Variety of work is excellent. Long-term clients provide ongoing work during economic downturns in Alberta. The group is large with capacity through all levels, which helps contribute to flexible teams and freedom for work-life balance.

    Kontras

There is little "active" management occurring and upper level (corporate) management does not add value to workers, only shareholders. This is exemplified by ongoing, complicated, and useless corporate programs rolled out regularly through a barage of email communications that have little bearing on local practices or day-to-day operations and are mostly ignored. Steady erosion of employee benefits (similar to... other companies)

    Rat an das Management

Consider positioning Amec Foster Wheeler as "the best" workplace for passionate, intelligent, motivated, and family-oriented professionals, by: - offer better-than competitive salaries and bonuses - consider IMPROVING/INCREASING benefits (i.e. vacation time, perks, courses, conferences) rather than continously eroding them - Local management should communicate directly to employees on a regular basis - More... focus and attention needed to facilitate EIT and junior engineer development. - reinstate support for employee-led local charity programs and extra-curricular activities

    Pros

Good benefits. Compensation is above average compared to other geotechnical firms. Offers educational opportunities. Wide variety of projects and clients.

    Kontras

Poor workload balance and forecasting. Limited career advancement opportunities. Easy to get stuck in one area of work. Complex, confusing and ever changing management structure.

    Rat an das Management

Worker harder to keep your best employees. Give individual offices more freedom. Invest in new technologies and data management solutions. Ween off reliance on mega projects and clients to help with stability during poor economic times.

Ich habe für mehr als 3 Jahre bei Amec Foster Wheeler gearbeitet (Vollzeit)

    Pros

Lots of overtime in the summer meant very good money. Reasonable benefits. Opportunity for relocation if you were qualified.

    Kontras

Employees were typically overworked, very little support was provided by the senior engineers for those doing the actual work. While AMEC is supposed to be a world-wide company, there was very little interaction between the offices, and it seemed more like they were fighting for the same work. Very much an old boys club, where being friends with your boss was much more highly rewarded than being productive and a... good hard worker.

Ich arbeite seit mehr als einem Jahr bei Amec Foster Wheeler (Vollzeit)

    Pros

    - Due to the company size, you get to meet a lot of great people among coworkers, clients and contractors, which gives opportunities for friendships and lasting industry connections. - There are several teams within one group, and if you don't like what you're doing as part of your original team, there are usually opportunities to switch.

    Kontras

    - Compensation is among the lowest in the field. It can be demoralizing to work with engineers from other companies knowing that you do the same work and get paid significantly less. Overachievers of all experience levels are not encouraged financially, and typically leave, while underachievers remain and move into positions of authority. - Due to the above, people are not managed properly. Junior engineers walk... around like lost puppies, from door to door, asking all the senior staff for work. New senior staff are likewise not properly connected to junior staff and keep looking for someone to delegate their work to. Some people are stuck on endless rotations in the field, without any chance for maintaining relationships at home, others are never sent out. In addition, layoffs and managers' power-tripping attitude promote an atmosphere of disconnectedness, uncertainty and fear for your job. - Very slow progression of skills: if you're in the field, you will be doing the same thing for several years, along with technicians, who are doing the same work as you (and of course technician-level experience doesn't count towards a P.Eng). If you're in the office, you can do decent design work as a senior/intermediate engineer. However, P.Engs tend to forget their professional duty to train the younger members, and as a junior you will be stuck for months or years doing data entry and other administrative tasks that get dumped on you from above. - Even though company's official policy is flex hours (9-4), working 9-6 or 7-4 is frowned upon, unless you are in a senior position. Taking a 30 min lunch or no lunch is frowned upon by at least one team lead. When working in the office, you end up being at work 9 hrs a day and coming/leaving during rush hour traffic. - Although on paper there is diversity, in reality there is a lot of racial favouritism: white people stick with white people, brown people stick with brown people, etc. Perhaps it's a natural tendency in many workplaces, but management should be paying attention to this segregation and encouraging the talent to mix and flow.

    Rat an das Management

Stop hiring new people, make the ones you already have busy, and encourage performance with bonuses or pay increases. Start making reasonable field schedules and allow work-life balance. Allow office people to have actual flexible schedules or work from home. Stop with the condescending unapproachable attitude, your people will do a better job if they like you more. Don't allow discrimination, especially coming from... senior staff - if you think someone is getting treated unfairly, speak out.
