    Pros

    There are a great bunch of people 'on the shop floor' getting work done. In my time there I had the privilege to work with genuinely talented people in a variety of teams, who were generous with their time and expertise.

    The benefits are also pretty good for a company of this size, and the informal atmosphere is nice if that fits with how you want to work.

    Kontras

    Senior management is fairly dysfunctional and the only thing which is certain is uncertainty. Decisions are made, contradicted by other management team members, and overturned in a matter of days on a regular basis making planning impossible. People are also regularly shuttled in and out of roles as a matter of convenience rather than based on qualifications. The founders of the company are still heavily involved in day to day decisions which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but there seems to have been an inability to delegate and relinquish control as the company has grown.

    As a company Unidays is good at talking the talk when it comes to startup culture, but quickly becomes secretive and authoritarian when senior management feels threatened. Strategically there was little evidence of coordination at the SMT level and, as others have mentioned, naive growth strategies recently led to massive layoffs & redundancies.

    Anyone considering applying should also take the time to read up on the widely publicised allegations surrounding members of the senior management team (Google News is your friend here, just search for the company name) and make a judgement call as to what they tell you about the company culture.

    Rat an das Management

    As founders, recognise that the company has outgrown you in certain ways and that you need to bring in leadership with more experience in running a larger company. There comes a point where your continued involvement does more harm than good, and if you want the company to succeed then you need to step back.
