    I never knew what the term "breadcrumbing" meant until I interviewed at Shareworks by Morgan Stanley.

    For the hiring process, things were pretty standard. There was a pre-screening with a technical recruiter. Followed by a technical interview with two software engineers. Questions were pretty basic, mostly focused on object-oriented programming principles and design.

    After receiving an offer and signing, I was told that I would receive a start date after a background check was completed. Little did I know that this would be the beginning of an over five month long process and my introduction to the term "breadcrumbing".

    I was subsequently told that I had a potential criminal match, which I don't. This began a months long process of trying to clear this false positive. I received very little communication from the company, just enough reassurance that things would be resolved and I would start working soon. Emails and phone calls I would send went unanswered.

    After supplying fingerprints to confirm my identity and still not receiving a response almost a month later, I went and got my own background check done to clear my own mind. And, as I thought, there was nothing on my record. After sending this to them, nothing changed and it became clear they had no intention of onboarding anytime soon, if ever.

    In the end, I started interviewing again, once it became clear I wasn't going to be onboarded and cancelled my offer letter.
    If you are planning on signing an offer letter, I would ensure you have a firm start date.
