    1. Toxic and unprofessional work culture. It was not uncommon to hear senior managers gossiping about one another. I personally had my boss tell me not to listen to our Director; an incredibly awkward place to be put in by your immediate superior.
    2.. Old and inundated business management systems from the 1990's are still used.
    3. Lack of open communication between management and the executive level.
    4. No formalized training processes for new hires.
    5. Poor compensation - but honestly...what do you expect?
    6. Gradually moving business operations from lovely San Diego to lesser San Antonio (Sorry Texas)

    Rat an das Management

    1. Stop hiring top-notch candidates to work at PETCO. I know this advice is perhaps counter-intuitive, but when I was at PETCO, there was a big push to hire MBA's and graduate students who quickly grew dissatisfied with the job and company after a couple of months to a year. Turnover among new employees at PETCO is incredibly high. Either start paying more or quit taking advantage of the horribly job market to get highly over-qualified (but desperate) candidates because they are only going to leave your company as soon as they find another job.

    2. Formalize training for new hires. When I started at Petco, there was no training program or process for my job. Training was the responsibility of each department manager, whom seldom did because he/she was too busy or apathetic to do so. As a result, PETCO has a string inconsistency of performance between departments; testament to the department manager's ability and willingness to create their own training program. This of course hurts productivity and makes new hires even more apt to find another job as quick as possible.
